However, the tuning is quite sharp, suggesting that the antenna has a reasonably high Q, and should be capable of giving about as good performance as you could expect from a short base loaded whip antenna. This is, of course, much too large for pedestrian mobile operation, but it works great set up next a tent or a park bench. I use eight 15 foot long ground radials. The analyzer makes quick work of the trimming. Resonance is achieved by selecting the appropriate tap in effect shorting out the lower portion of the loading coil and then fine-tuning by extending or reducing the telescopic whip. However, the FT's front-panel BNC isn't designed to take the strain, and more than one user has had the center pin of the plug break off inside, requiring an expensive non-warranty repair.

InsteadI'll just list what I think are the good and bad points of this radio. However, having experienced how hard it is to get small portable antennas to match in the .
I appreciate your comments, 73, de Karl, KO8S. This gets me on 15, 17, 20, 30, 40m bands. It is noteworthy that a good match can be obtained on 40m and 80m even though the length of the counterpoise is a lot less than a quarter wave.

I was considering a Pac12, but went for a Par Endfedz multiband, as I didn't feel that I would have enough time to build all the components of the Pac Mine needed about 8 inches off on the 20 meter end, and about 4 more off the 40 meter end.

This is an excellent little antenna that uses tried and tested principles and gives surprisingly good results. This results in a whip length of about 40cm on 30m.

Tip the mast down flip the pair of switches, put the mast back up and you are on another band. And, 6 thru 40 meters is all I would be interested in anyhow. This is, of course, much too large for pedestrian mobile operation, but it works great set up next a tent or a park bench.

Measurements for 80m were not made for much the same reason, plus the fact that a resonant counterpoise would need to be longer than the wire available at the time. My only quibble is that when installed the antenna leans a little to one side, as it uses a standard PL elbow connector rather than a specially made part, and the 'teeth' aren't oriented to allow the whip to stand up straight.

    I bought a 7.

Measurements for 30m were not attampted due to my feeling that the ATX would be too inefficient on this band. Measurements for 80m were not made for much the same reason, plus the fact that a resonant counterpoise would need to be longer than the wire available at the time. The Pac12 could bring in a signal well.

Best QRP antenna for portable operation

My experience with the Par EndFedz is that you will get one that is too long, and you will need to trim it. There are certainly more effective portable antennas to be had, but if you really must use a short vertical for your QRP operations then the ATX Walkabout is unbeatable.

    1. A short garden stake is pounded into the ground a foot or so, then the PVC mount goes over it and the pole on the mount.
